Volunteer

Give back to those who need it most.

One of the best ways you can help support survivors in your community is by volunteering. We rely on our volunteers, and couldn't do what we do without them! As a SAFE volunteer, you can answer hotline calls, accompany survivors to the hospital and court dates, support family members, help with fundraisers, and more. Our volunteer program is divided into two sections: Indirect and direct volunteers.

Indirect volunteers

As an indirect service volunteer, you can help with fundraisers and events, and any other opportunity that does not directly interact with survivors or their families. Anyone can be an indirect volunteer! If you are interested in becoming an indirect volunteer, contact our main office at 618-283-1414 to learn about upcoming opportunities.

Direct volunteers

Direct volunteers interact with survivors and their families. In order to become a direct volunteer, you must complete our sexual assault crisis volunteer training, which is held several times a year. This training can be completed either in person or virtually. Direct volunteers will be required to complete a background check, and will be assessed following training to ensure that they are ready to be a SAFE volunteer.

We realize that many volunteers are interested in helping because they are survivors. A survivor who has not been healed themselves may risk being retraumatized while working with other survivors. This assessment is intended to ensure that the volunteer is able to do the work while protecting their own mental health and giving the best care to other survivors. If after training, you are not ready to be a direct volunteer, this is not necessarily permanent, and there are many other ways to help.

If you are interested in becoming a direct volunteer, please contact us at 618-283-1414 or email safe@safecrisiscenter.org and request a volunteer application. We welcome volunteers of any race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. All direct volunteers must be over 18 years of age.
